Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus, also known as the endometrial cavity. This procedure allows gynecologists to diagnose and sometimes treat various uterine conditions without the need for large incisions. A hysteroscope, which is a thin, lighted tube equipped with a camera, is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The camera projects images onto a monitor, enabling the doctor to observe the uterine lining clearly.

Hysteroscopy is commonly used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, such as heavy menstrual periods, bleeding between periods, or postmenopausal bleeding. It can also detect structural abnormalities like polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or congenital malformations. In addition to diagnostic purposes, hysteroscopy can be therapeutic. Procedures such as removing polyps, fibroids, or scar tissue, taking endometrial biopsies, or performing sterilization procedures can be done through hysteroscopy without major surgery.

The procedure can be performed under local, regional, or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity and patient comfort. It is generally safe, with minimal recovery time, allowing most patients to resume normal activities within a day. Some mild side effects like cramping, light bleeding, or dizziness may occur, but serious complications are rare.

Hysteroscopy offers several advantages over traditional methods. It provides a direct and clear view of the uterine cavity, improves diagnostic accuracy, and reduces the need for invasive surgery. It also helps in early detection of abnormalities, which is particularly important for women experiencing infertility or recurrent miscarriages.

Overall, hysteroscopy is a highly effective, safe, and patient-friendly procedure that plays a crucial role in modern gynecology. It allows timely diagnosis and treatment of uterine conditions while minimizing discomfort and recovery time, making it an invaluable tool for women’s reproductive health.
